For the rich, $5 million is the new $1 million
July 23, 2013, 2:23 PM
.By Matthew Heimer
Call it a harbinger of a cultural Gilded Age, or an indicator of inflation,
or just another sign that in America, even affluent people prefer to think
of themselves as middle class. Whatever the reasons, the conclusion is the
same: Most high-net-worth Americans no longer think that having $1 million
makes you rich. In a survey of affluent investors released this week by UBS
Wealth Management Americas, only 28% of investors who had between $1 million
and $5 million in investable assets (not including the value of their
primary residence) said they considered themselves “wealthy.” And even
among those with $5 million in assets, there were clearly some undercurrents
of financial self-doubt – only 60% of that group identified themselves as
wealthy.
Editha/Shutterstock.comThey’re comfortable, but are they wealthy? To me and
other nobodies who are worth six figures or fewer, these “I’m not wealthy
” responses – from people who are better off than 98% of the world – may
seem more than a little tone-deaf. On the other hand, it’s worth noting
that the UBS survey framed its questions in such a way that may have skewed
the answers–most notably, in the options it offered as answers to the
question, “What does it take to be considered ‘wealthy’?” My personal
answer to that question would be something like “Feeling confident in my
financial security,” or the UBS-provided response, “Never having to work.
” But the option that the largest number of survey respondents chose was “
No financial constraints on activities.” That raises the bar considerably:
When you put it that way – No constraints? I can take my family to Hawaii
as many times as I want—on my private jet?!? I can walk the grounds of my
estate with my pet ocelots?!? – well then, yes, $1 million or even $5
million might not cut the mustard.
With that in mind, it’s instructive to take the survey’s benchmark numbers
and apply them to an admittedly oversimplified retirement scenario. Let’s
say you and your spouse retire with a nest egg of $1 million. If you’re
very responsible, you’re putting aside, say, $220,000 for out-of-pocket
medical costs, so now you have $780,000 to live on. If you follow the
classic 4% rule for withdrawals, you’ll be paying yourself an income of $31
,200 a year, plus whatever you’re getting annually from Social Security.
Let’s say it all comes to $56,000 before taxes. Are you comfortable? Yes.
Financially secure? Probably. Living with “no financial constraints”?
Probably not.
Retire with a $5 million portfolio, on the other hand, and your 4%-plus-
Social-Security income is around $200,000 a year. That’s still not enough
for Gulfstreams and ocelots, but it’s enough to feel as though your range
of options, for everything from leisure time to estate planning, is far
wider.
Two other interesting footnotes from the survey: Among the high-net-worth
crowd, those under age 50 are much more worried than those over age 60 about
whether they’ll be able to cover their medical expenses in retirement. And
as Encore’s Anne Tergesen writes today, most of the investors in the
survey said they were giving financial support to either adult kids or aging
parents.
