I think it really depends. Some professors may do it, but
I don't see many around here, if the advisor is a da niu,
he could be too busy to care about the student, but that is
not a common practice. Compared to the situation in China,
students may take more responsibility for themselves, but
advisors still care a lot so that more results are produced...
I don't know many professors though, I just judge from the several
I know around me. They are usually much concerned about
students.

我在日本，我一来，导师就定好了几个题目给我，我就选了一个，这
就完成了。呵呵。
听同学说(他学经济)，他的师兄光选题就选了一年半。
差别这么大？
