Zion overview

Shuttle Stops:
Court of the Patriarchs- (5 minutes .1 mile walk)
Zion Lodge- Emerald Pools trailhead (1-3 hrs. Lower-1.2 miles rt.
Middle- 2 miles rt. Upper- 3 miles rt)
The Grotto- Angels Landing trailhead (4-5 hrs. 5 miles rt)
Weeping Rock- Weeping Rock trail. (1/2 hour. .4 mile walk rt)
Big Bend - View the Angels Landing ridge trail
Temple of Sinawava- Riverside trail, gateway to the Narrows. (1.5
hours. 2 miles rt)
6/13, Zion (trail miles=2+6=8)
- pack lunch
- a RT on the shuttle lasts about 90 mins. Temple of Sinawava is the
upper most stop so allow about 45 min to get there from the park entrance.
- Temple of Sinawava- Riverside trail, gateway to the Narrows. (1 hours.
2 miles rt)
- the Narrows
- You might want to bring an extra pair of shoes and a walking stick
. Or, There are Outfitters in Springdale that rent gear
for hiking in Zion Narrows. These outfitters have canyoneering boots
and walking sticks to assist you in hiking in the Virgin River.
Two hours upstream, at the intersection with Orderville Canyon,
hikers will encounter the narrowest and most spectacular
section of the Zion Narrows. Round trip to Orderville Canyon and
back is 6 miles and takes 4-5 hours.
The Narrows is a strenuous, up to 5 mile hike through a slot canyon.
You can return at anytime, most families will hike to the
Orderville confluence and then return. It is approximately 2.5 miles
to the confluence, which is the gateway to the Narrows.
http://www.citrusmilo.com/zionguide/narrowsday.cfm
Less than half-a-mile from the Temple of Sinawava, you will pass
Mystery Falls, a beautiful spot where water rolls down the sandstone walls
from the canyon above. Roughly 1.5 miles from ToS is the beginning of the
section that many Springdale outfitters call "Wall Street" -- the start of
the narrowest section of canyon where you will now be hiking in the water
almost all of the time. And soon after, you will pass the mouth of
Orderville Canyon on the right (east) side of the river. Note: continue from
the Orderville confluence for another half mile, it is well worth it, imho.
Side Trip up Orderville Canyon: Roughly half-a-mile up Orderville Canyon,
you will come to a small waterfall formation (known by some as "Veiled Falls
") where the National Park Service has placed a sign that prohibits further
travel upstream. MUST RETURN FROM here!!!
- Sunset at another common and convenient spot that gets quite crowded
with photographers in the late afternoon, the view
south of the Virgin River with the Watchman in the background is an
iconic view of Zion.
The route is to hike from Zion museum on the Pa’rus Trail and along
the Virgin River 1 miles to the Canyon Junction Bridge.
- Do laundry
6/14, Zion (trail miles=5+3=8)
- pack lunch
- The Grotto- Angels Landing trailhead (4-5 hrs. 5 miles rt). Hit Scout
Lookout then back.
http://modernhiker.com/2013/04/29/hiking-zion-national-park-angels-landing/
- Fill rest of the day with short trails at other shuttle stops
- start from Zion lodge: Lower Emerald Pools trail, 1 hr, Lower Pool
1.2 miles rt; upper pool add 1 hr
- check with visitor centor about other easy sunset viewing point
- Sunset at Grand Junction
6/15, leave for Bryce
- Zion, Canyon Overlook Trail (1 hour, 1 mi/1.6 km round trip)
- Note: I do not think one need to go to Red canyon if he plan to go to
Bryce. Not worth it. Imho.
Enroute to Bryce, stop at Red Canyon, check with visitor center to
decide which trail to take:
The Birds Eye Trail is a moderate .8-mile hike offering spectacular
close-up views of the red rock formations.
The 3-mile Losee Canyon Trail provides a more rugged look at some of
the Red Canyon area "crown jewels".
- Bryce, Mossy Cave Trail (.8 mi/1.3k round trip)
- check in hotel
- sunset @ sunset point or inspiration point
Bryce Canyon NP
For sunset, we recommend Inspiration Point, Paria View or Sunset Point,
and plan to arrive 1 hour before sunset for the best lighting.
The two most popular viewpoints for sunrise are Sunrise Point and Bryce
Point.
6/16, Bryce
- Rim trail, sunset point. Take right side Navajo Loop, continue to
Queens Garden Trail,
come up to sunrise point, then rim trail, ends at Sunset point. (3.5
mile Roundtrip 1-3 hours).
- Rainbow Point Shuttle Tour. Note: we took it. I reget it. Not worth it.
- sunset @Paria View
- optional: Bristlecone Loop, too long a drive to the rainbow point
myself
6/17, leave for Capitol Reef
En route to Torrey, Highway 12
- Anasazi State Park Museum, eat lunch

- from Anasazi State Park Museum to Capitol Reef, 1 hr drive
- At Capitol Reef, check out look out points along route 24
- Capitol Dome (pullout is about 500 meters beyond Hickman bridge
trail parking) etc
- if hv time, Hickman Bridge, 2 miles rt, trail leads to the base of
a 40.5 m natural rock bridge. Loop provides a Fremont River Overlook.
- Chimney Rock, Fruita school house, Petroglyphs,
- check in hotel @ 4pm
- sunset at Goosenecks Overlook and Panorama Point:
http://pamphotography.wordpress.com/2011/11/19/a-weekend-in-capitol-reef-national-park/
6/18, Capitol Reef (trail miles=3.5+3+2.5=9)
- pack lunch
- Cassidy Arch (3.5 miles RT, moderate). Trail begins on north side
of canyon 300 yards (275 m) from the parking lot
at Grand Wash Road. Climbs steeply with some exposure along high
cliffs, ending on top of the arch.
* Tips: It looks intimidating, but don't miss the opportunity to
walk out on top of the arch.
http://www.everytrail.com/guide/cassidy-arch-capitol-reef-national-park
- Note: due to traffic jam, we run out of time. Did not do below grand
wash trail.
Grand Wash trail, 5 miles round trip. From the Highway 24 trailhead,
very gradual climb of 200 feet (60 m) along narrow wash
bottom with sheer canyon walls on both sides. From the Grand Wash
Road trailhead, the trail travels down the wash.
Narrow section in the middle, so if only reach the narrow section
then back, the trip will be 3 miles round trip
- optional: Capitol Gorge trail, 2.5 mile round trip, mostly level
walking in a narrow wash bottom with sheer canyon walls and Pioneer Register
;
waterpockets or "tanks" require a short climb with an elevation
increase of 80 feet (25 m)
http://www.utah.com/hike/capitol-gorge-trail
- scenic drive is 90 min long RT
- sunset at Historic Fruita Settlement, Castle: Near the Visitor Center
- optional:
6/19, Leave to Grand Junction
rough time estimates:
Grand Junction, CO ---> moab, utah
113 mi, 1 hour 39 mins
I-70 W and US-191 S
Moab to Monument Valley
150 mi, 2 hours 40 mins
US-191 S and US-163 S/US-163 Scenic S
Monument Valley to Page, AZ
