I agree that December is also good time to go to Death Valley, Big Bend...
Some additions for lesser known parks:
- Channel Island is good year long; although the best time is spring where
wild flowers bloom; but December is not bad
- Caves have same temperature year-round. Among the NPs, there are wind
caves and Carlsbad. I wouldn't go to wind caves because there is no much
else to do in the winter. But NM/TX could a good trip, including Bosque Del
Apache NWR, Really big array, White Sand NM, Carlsbad, and maybe Big Bend if
you dont mind driving a lot.
- Saguaro in AZ is pleasant in winter, although the best time is spring when
cactus bloom. not an exciting park though
- Yellowstone is unique in winter
- Utah parks are all doable in winter, but it could be too cold. If you
really want to go in winter, focus on Zion which is on lower elevation and
warmer. You can still hike narrows with wet pants.
- Technically speaking, St John on USVI is a national park. But it will be
more like a tropical vacation than a typical NP experience | l**********9
