My first triathlon race. First summary of performance: total time 5:12:45,
swimming split 1.2 miles/33:42, surprisingly fast, actually, much faster
than I have ever swum in a pool! biking split 56 miles/2:48:18, excellent by
my standard for a rolling hill course. Running, half marathon/1:47:50,
awful awful run, bonked from mile 2. Transition was excellent, wasted no
time. On the overall, it was a more than satisfying performance.
Now the details.
Equipment:
swimming -- wetsuit (5mm sleeveless), goggles, swimming cap.
biking -- apart from the bike, multi-purpose tools, CO2 pumps, spare tube,
levers, hammer gel, one bottle of hammer perpetuem, one bottle of gatorade
mixed with additional electrolyte, helmet.
running -- apart from the obvious things, a race number belt, GU gels.
transition -- a towel, a bucket of water (to rinse off sand on feet).
My triathlon training lasted 7 weeks. It was basically a marathon training
with the addition of swimming (typically 1500-3000 yds at a time) and biking
(20-40 miles at a time).
Yesterday was a full day of carb loading. This morning I got up at 3:30am,
ate two bananas by 4am, got to the transition area at 5am. I drank so much
water that I went to the bathroom five times. It turns out everyone's got a
fancy bike. Almost everyone has aerobars, and most have a specialized tri
bike, some came with racing wheels. Even though I love my new tri bike,
which is pretty fancy by my standard, it's probably one of the crappiest
among today's racers' bikes.:) At 6:30am, we walked one mile down the beach
to the swimming start.
The swimming started in waves. First the elite, then the age groups. It was
funny watching the elite getting into the water, hopping through the shallow
parts like joyful little girls. It was raining and there were big waves
coming toward the shore, a bit intimidating at first. When I got into the
water, it wasn't such a big deal. All that open water practice really helped
. I was surprising calm and confident this time. In fact, more than just
calm, I felt joyful in the water. The little tastes of sea water actually
felt good, believe it or not! I deviated from the courses a couple times,
but quickly corrected myself. It may be the extra flotation provided by the
wetsuit, which puts my body in a better position, or it may be that the
current helped, when I finished the swim, I found that I only took less than
34 minutes. That was faster than I have ever swum at this distance in a
swimming pool. A lot faster, actually. And I wasn't even trying that hard.
This is the most fun I have ever had in swimming.
I ran onto the beach, into the transition area. This is when barefoot
running is actually useful! I took off my wetsuit, rinsed my right foot,
into my sock, shoe, then left foot. Swimming watch off, Garmin 305 on,
helmet on, get the bike, go. It was an amazing smooth transition,
considering that I have never done this before, except in my head. I got on
the bike and was immediately overtaking everyone insight. I felt strong, but
I was going too hard at the beginning. A large portion of the bike course
is on the highway. When it's off the highway, it's rolling hills, steep at
times. The highway isn't flat either. By mile 10 I feel pretty terrible. I
thought I was gonna cramp soon. At mile 14, I thought, it's only a quarter,
how am I gonna get through this? But magically, I regained my energy 20
miles into my biking. Perhaps the hammer nutrition system helped. I didn't
have much experience with it, and didn't trust it fully, so I had another
bottle of gatorade. In retrospect, I probably should have filled both
bottles with hammer perpetuem.
I was riding hard, going up the hills strong, riding out of my seat when
necessary, and attacking downhills. I passed numerous cyclists along the way
, including many with fancy racing wheels, some even with aero helmets.
Sometimes a guy on a fancy bike will overtake me on a flat portion, but I
will pass him on a climb. At the beginning of the bike ride, when I pass a
rider, I say "on your left". At the end of the ride, I say "good job"
instead. We are all feeling it. I pretty much went all out on the bike,
averaging 20mph, partially because I was over confident about my running. I
will pay a price very soon. But even if I knew what's gonna happen, I
probably wouldn't have done it any other way. When I get on my bike, the
need of speed takes over. Slowing down is simply not an option. A funny
thing is, when you are in a running race, and the spectators clap, it's
mostly for encouragement. But when I pass by spectators at 24mph tucked on
my aerobar, they all clap as if they were watching a professional tournament
, if you know what I mean. It was kind of cool.
By mile 48 I have consumed both bottles of drinks. I had my opportunity to
get bottle exchange earlier, but at the time my empty bottle is a present
from my wife, and I didn't want to throw it away. So I rode my last 8 miles
with no drinks. It wasn't too big a deal as it was most flat or downhill
then. I got in the transition area, put on my racing number belt, and off I
run. Just as I stepped out of the gate, an official yelled, "are you gonna
run with that helmet on?" Oops. I took my helmet off and threw it back into
the transition area, and went on running.
My legs felt like jello getting off the ride. But actually, I kind of liked
the feeling. It didn't feel bad at all. However a mix of GU gel and water
was a catalyst for stomach upset. I was also trying to pee as I run, but
wear tight tri shorts it was not so easy. After mile 1 I felt that the chip
strap on my ankle was too tight and stopped for a second to fix it. When I
resumed running, things are different. I feel depleted. Yes, I am hitting
the wall at mile 1! That's new. Previously I had hoped to make 1:35, but now
I realized that it was impossible. I'd be happy with 8 min miles. This is
an ultra race by runner's standard anyway. At mile 4 I managed to visit the
bathroom and resolved my stomach problem. But it didn't make me faster. I
thought I'd overtake many people on the run but that didn't happen. I was
overtaken by many instead, including a tiny girl, who would have no chance
beating me in swimming or on the bike, but there she was, passing me on the
run. Shame on me as a runner. I decided that I should just treat it as an
easy run. I've got a relay race to run in another five days, and I better
not try to kill myself running here. Actually, my body was so depleted that
it didn't want to push anyway. It was a feeling similar to hitting the wall
in my first two marathons. Thank god it's only a half! In the final couple
miles, I start to feel better and picked up the pace a bit. The final half
mile was on the sand. It was tough to go fast. As I approached the finishing
gate, I pumped my fist for the camera.:) The gun time was 5:22, and later I
found out that my net time is just under 5:13. Not bad at all. I ranked 108
out of 316 finishers (not including relay teams). This is a strong field
indeed.
Some general thoughts. I love triathlon. This is a fantastic sport. When you
look at runners in a marathon, they come in all shapes, from skinny to fat,
most of them do not have impressive physique. At the tri race, most of the
men have well defined biceps and six-packs, their veins showing, and you
know they are no pretenders. Unlike hengmei however, I didn't have the luck
to see naked girls or girls on bike in bikini.
So what's next...the full ironman is definitely in the agenda, but the main
obstacles are time and money. But definitely within the next two years, if
not next year. The full is definitely a much tougher beast, and would
require much more preparation.

他应该不是纯新手, 他对训练的定义跟普通人完全不同....
比如训练马拉松, 全年跑步他不叫训练, 只管最后的几周
intense training叫训练....
