This is an example of partisan journalism that seeks to hide information
from the American people. This messenger needs to find some other line of
work, preferably as a shill for the DNC where her work will come under
Campaign Finance restrictions.
To read this article (and others like it that have appeared) one would get
the idea that there is a disagreement over a payroll tax cut--whether it
should be short-term or long-term. I couldn't believe that Congress was
going to the mat over something that inconsequential. Even the most shallow-
minded Congressperson, left or right, is not going to risk Christmas
vacation or voter ire over that.
Turns out the WSJ is hiding information that this is about spending cuts and
how to pay for the tax cuts. We just had a debt ceiling crisis, remember?
We just had a super committee that failed to find ways to reduce the deficit
. Anybody in the news media remember that? But to this reporter, it's as if
those issues had never been a part of public discourse.
One has to look long and hard to find any clue as to what the disagreement
is really about. The reporter touches on it but dismisses it as Republican "
bemoaning": "They bemoaned the absence of key provisions—such as new
restrictions on unemployment insurance and cuts in federal employee benefits
—that had been included in the House version of the bill."
Yeah. Such as. But that's what the conflict is really about. It's about the
issues we've been debating all year long, and this WSJ reporter isn't even
going to point that out. It's not about a two-month vs full year tax cut.
That's a side show -- a tactical issue. But the sentence about the real
issues is buried in all the fluff that surrounds it.
The reporter wastes a whole paragraph on standard boilerplate fluff from Rep
. Scott Brown: ""During this time of blah blah blah blah rigid partisan
ideology and unwillingness to compromise blah blah blah blah blah working
together for the good of the American people." That's what they always say
when they want to ram something through. But those words say nothing at all
about the substance. The real substance is the "such as" that the
Republicans are "bemoaning." But no, the reporter doesn't have the space to
inform us about that, no matter how relevant it is to the debates we've been
having over the past year.
According to some people, Social Security does not have a bright future,
remember? The real conflict is about cutting the funding for Social Security
, but the reporter doesn't go there. Maybe it's some kind of 3rd rail for
journalists who want to stay on the good side of the Obama administration?
The reporter tells us that Brown calls for compromise. But she avoids
telling us what the topics that might be subject to compromise really are.
I wish I could say it is just journalistic incompetence, but I find it hard
to believe that anybody on the WSJ/Murdoch payroll is really that lacking in
curiosity and skill. |
