Coors Light bumps Budweiser from No. 2 spot
Coors Light has surpassed Budweiser as the No. 2 beer by shipments in the U.
S., including Puerto Rico and exports, trade publication Beer Marketer's
Insights reports.
This marks the first time since 1993 that Anheuser-Busch didn't control both
of the top two beer brands, according to the publication. Bud Light remains
the nation's top seller.
Coors Light is distributed in the U.S. by MillerCoors , a joint venture
of Denver- and Montreal-based Molson Coors Brewing Co . (NYSE: TAP) and
London-based SABMiller PLC.
While A-B hasn’t yet released its own sales figures for 2011, the
publication estimated that Budweiser fell 4.6 percent to 17.7 million
barrels while Coors Light shipped 18.2 million barrels, gaining about 0.8
percent last year.
Coors Light beat Budweiser in the U.S. even excluding Puerto Rico and
exports, according to Beer Marketer's Insights' report.
"Anytime you can dethrone the king, it's special," MillerCoors spokesman
Pete Marino said after the report, according to Advertising Age. "We will
celebrate this great accomplishment appropriately with our entire system who
has worked hard to deliver outstanding growth on Coors Light for the past
seven years."
Ad Age quoted an A-B spokesman as saying, "We're committed to — and on
track with — our strategy to stabilize Budweiser.”
St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch Inc. is part of Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch
InBev (NYSE: BUD). |
