As Food Packaging

The Food and Drug Administration's decision to reject the Natural Resources
Defense Council's (NRDC) call for the agency to ban bisphenol A (BPA) in
food packaging is a huge win for businesses, and more importantly, for
consumers.
BPA has been helping ensure food safety for decades and has not been proven
harmful to people. In its decision, the FDA rebutted left-wing activists who
have said for years that it is a human health threat, by pointing out that
the studies cited by green groups cannot be applied to humans.
"While evidence from some studies have raised questions as to whether BPA
may be associated with a variety of health effects, there remain serious
questions about these studies, particularly as they relate to humans," the
agency said, according to The Associated Press.
Given the NRDC's past success at creating health scares based on bad science
and getting the EPA to ban Alar, it was encouraging to see the FDA not bow
to pressure from the dozens of left-wing environmental groups in the case of
BPA.
Still, the left-wing attacks on BPA are likely to continue, and if history
repeats itself, the news media will continue to hype the threat of BPA even
in the wake of this FDA decision. And, in its letter of denial, the FDA
tells the NRDC that it will continue to study research on the safety of BPA. |
