I logged in ready to post a summary of the media coverage of the Republican
convention thus far only to find Mr. Laprarie had beaten me to it. So I
will suggest you start there and read his post, if you haven’t already.

Back? I will follow up by pointing out the latest occurrence. Last night
Susana Martinez spoke at the convention. Martinez is the governor of New
Mexico and as it happens is a Hispanic woman. By several accounts, Martinez
hit it out of the park last night. Ed Morrissey states that she laid claim
to the GOP future. He highlights this portion of her speech:
I fear some of our leaders today have lost the courage to stand up.
What we have now are politicians. They won’t offer real plans, and only
stand up when they want to blame someone else.
And I don’t say that just because a Democrat is in the White House, I
was a Democrat for many years, so were my parents.
Before I ran for district attorney, two Republicans invited my husband
and me to lunch, and I knew a party switch was exactly what they wanted. So
, I told Chuck, “We’ll be polite, enjoy a free lunch, and then say good-
bye.” But we talked about issues — they never used the words Republican
or Democrat, conservative or liberal. We talked about many issues, like
welfare, is it the way of life or hand up? Talked about size of government,
how much should it tax families and small businesses? And when we left that
lunch, we got in the car and I looked over at Chuck and said, “I’ll be
damned. We’re Republicans.”
While live blogging the convention, Ann Althouse noted the following:
9:19: Biggest cheer of the night comes when Gov. Susana Martinez says:
“I carried at 357 Smith & Wesson Magnum” (referring to her experience, as
an 18-year-old, working for her parents security guard business, protecting
the Catholic church at bingo times). She’s a good speaker. A nice edge of
passion in her voice. With toughness.
9:29: Both Meade and I thought: We may be looking at the first woman
President of the United States.
However, NBC News–not the runt of the litter MSNBC, but the actual NBC News
group–failed to even list Martinez as one of the speeches given on
Wednesday. These actions are indefensible. I take some comfort in the fact
that newspaper subscriptions are down, as is viewership of the more liberal
cable news channels. But this issue is important enough to me that I will
keep mentioning it so long as the behavior is blatantly and shamelessly
continued.
I realize that by posting here I am ranting to people who are already well
aware of the issue but I can’t help but feel that every little bit helps. |
