CHICAGO—President Barack Obama offered rare warm words for his opponent,
Mitt Romney, on this Election Day as he encouraged his own supporters to
turn out the vote and stopped by a campaign office to thank volunteers who
have toiled on his behalf.
“The great thing about these campaigns is after all the TV ads and all the
fundraising and all the debates and all the electioneering, it comes down to
this. One day and these incredible folks who are working so hard, making
phone calls, making sure that people go out to vote,” he said on a morning
visit to a Chicago campaign office.
He also thanked the American people, saying he has much confidence in their
“decency and goodness and wisdom.”
“I also want to say to Gov. Romney–congratulations on a spirited campaign
,” he added in a moment of generosity, uncommon from either side. “I know
that his supporters are just as engaged and just as enthusiastic and working
just as hard today.”
Still, Mr. Obama said he feels confident that his team has the votes to win.
“It’s going to depend ultimately on whether those votes turn out,” he
said, echoing political analysts who say his fate depends in large measure
on whether voters who prefer the president but are not particularly enthused
about the election go to the polls.
“And so I would encourage everybody on all sides just to make sure that you
exercise this precious right that you have that people fought so hard for,
for us to have,” Mr. Obama said.
He then again predicted victory, but added that he appreciates the support
he has received no matter what.
“I’m looking forward to the results. And I expect that we’ll have a good
night. But no matter what happens, I just want to say how much I appreciate
everybody who has supported me, everybody who has worked so hard on my
behalf,” he said. “And again, I want to congratulate Gov. Romney and his
team for a hard-fought race as well.”
Before making his remarks, the president phoned several volunteers in
neighboring Wisconsin working for his campaign.
“Hi is this Annie? This is Barack Obama,” he said to someone who
apparently was not expecting the call. “This is Barack Obama,” he repeated
. “You know, the president?”
He made six calls in all. “With all the work you guys are doing I’m sure
were going to win Wisconsin,” he told a volunteer named Donna.
“You guys are out there just tearing it up,” he told another volunteer. “
Proud of you guys.”
Before leaving the office to go to the Fairmont Hotel, where he will conduct
interviews in battleground states, he turned to pick up what he thought was
his cup of tea and took a sip. Turns out it was someone else’s cup of
coffee.
He turned to the proper owner: “You don’t have a cold, do you?” |
