If he was so interested in avoiding the fiscal cliff, why did he fly on our
dime to Hawaii last Friday only to turn around and jet back to Washington
now for some photo ops?
President Barack Obama is cutting short his Hawaiian holiday to leave
for Washington on Wednesday to address the unfinished “fiscal cliff”
negotiations with Congress, the White House said on Tuesday.
As the clock ticks toward a January 1 deadline, efforts to avert a sharp
rise in taxes and deep spending cuts have stalled, worrying world financial
markets.
Obama and congressional lawmakers left Washington on Friday for the
Christmas holidays with talks to avert the fiscal disaster in limbo.
When Obama arrives back in Washington early on Thursday, the focus will
shift to the U.S. Senate after Republicans in the House of Representatives
failed to pass their own budget measures last week.
So he took a 10-hour flight from DC to Hawaii last week, then he’ll take
another back to DC Thursday. Once they pretend to make a deal, he’ll hop
back on AF1 to resume playing golf, then will return in a couple of week for
his lavish inaugural.
Once all this flying is done that’ll be around 40 hours travel at a cost of
at least $180,000 an hour for a tab of $7.2 million. And that’s just to
fly AF1, never mind all the other ancillary costs, which probably boosts the
tab to a tidy $10 million or so.
Yes, he’s really concerned about our dire financial state.
Update: We overlooked the tab to keep the charming first lady on Hawaii. She
’s very high maintenance, needless to say. |
