According to the Republican National Committee, Republicans must grant the
11 million illegal immigrants currently living in the United States
citizenship if they want to win any future elections. And according to Mitt
Romney, he lost the 2012 election because Latinos love Obamacare.
Both of these beliefs are not supported by recent polling.
According to a Pew Research Center poll released last week, just 49 percent
of Hispanics believe those currently living in the United States illegally
should be allowed to become citizens. A whopping 80 percent of Hispanics do
believe that illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the U.S., but
many of them also believe granting them permanent residency would be a more
acceptable outcome.
And The Los Angeles Times reports today that while just 19 percent of
Latinos have an unfavorable view of Obamacare, another 32 percent don’t
know how they feel about the law. That means just 48 percent of Latinos have
a favorable opinion of Obamacare.
A path to citizenship and Obamacare are popular among Latinos, but neither
enjoys the support of a majority of Latinos. There is simply no need for
Republicans to grant citizenship to illegal immigrants or cave on Obamacare
in order to be competitive among Hispanic voters. | a**e
