They have a so-called right to privacy, so this is the most we may ever find
out thanks to Governor Deval Patrick. Remarkably, at least one Democrat is
looking to get to the bottom of this, asking how many other perps are on the
dole.
Linsky told the Herald, “I would be extremely upset on behalf of the
taxpayers if people who are not in Massachusetts, let alone in the country,
are receiving benefits. I’d certainly hope the executive branch has a
system in place to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
Linsky’s committee will meet this afternoon to pore over about 200
pages of DTA documents on the Tsarnaevs. The Herald reported last week that
Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his wife received benefits, and that he and his
younger brother, accused bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, previously received
benefits through their parents.
Both Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, were listed
in the Terror Identities Datamart Environment, a terrorism database, in 2011
— at a time when Zubeidat was receiving food stamps and Tamerlan and his
family were
collecting both food stamps and cash benefits.
Linsky called his committee meeting after the Patrick administration
refused to provide details, citing the accused terrorists’ privacy rights.
But state Sen. Robert Hedlund (R-Weymouth) voiced skepticism about Linsky’s
action — calling it nothing more than a “dog and pony show” to grab
headlines.
“After 10 years of fighting on this issue,” said Hedlund, “I’m
starting to get skeptical that most of the Democrats don’t really seem to
have any interest in addressing any aspects of this problem.” |
