oppose charter schools。现在准备的理由包括：
1) Education is not only a school issue, but also an issue about family. In
the current system (school enrollment is based on residence), students at
the same school are from the same community, and much similar family
backgrounds. In this system, the school is easier to cooperate with the
families. Charter school is a fully different story regarding students'
family backgrounds. It may become more challenging for the school to satisfy
every student's specific interests.
2) No doubt, there are some schools, which are so popular that there are
more applicants than what they can accommodate. In this situation
applications will be accepted through a lottery. In this case, parents
cannot control the result if their students will be able to be enrolled into
a school they prefer. In the current system, if parents want to enroll
their students into a preferred school, they can move to the service area of
this school, buying a house or renting an apartment. Even if the parents
cannot afford to live in this area, they may look for government's help, for
example, applying for Section 8. The advantage is that it is under parents'
control.
3) Parents should take responsibility to their children's education.
Obviously, in the current system, a house or apartment near a nice school
usually costs more. It can be seen as the parents' investment into their
children's future by moving into this community. We can take President Obama
's grandparents as a model. President Obama attended Punahou School, an
elite private school in Hawaii, for high school education. At that time, he
lived with his grandparents, who paid very high tuition for him from their
life-long saving. His grandparents rented instead of owning their house. Of
course, they could save this tuition and pay for better living condition.
They chose to invest their children's education by scarifying some of their
living condition. If all parents can follow this model, the situation of
American education should be far better than what it is today.
