Subject: A Letter from a Leading Chinese American Organization-NCCA
October 28, 2013
Dear Mr. Robert Iger. Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company, Ms. Anne
Sweeney, CoChair, Disney Media Network. Mr. Peter Seymour, Chairman. ABC, Ms
. Lisa Berger, Executive Woe President. ABC:
The National Council of Chinese Americans (NCCA), one of the the leading
organizations that successfully led the campaign for the Congressional
apology resolution for the "1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, expresses its grave
disappointment with ABC over its decision to air an insensitive and. to many
. offensive skit on Jimmy Kimmel Live show, where languages such as "kill
all the Chinese‘ are approved and aired. We call on ABC to immediately
issue a formal. open and meaningful apology to all Americans, particularly
to Chinese and Asian Americans.
We are living in a multi-ethnic society. Tolerance and being sensitive
toward each other should and must be the American bedrock of a sound
democracy and thriving society.
All of us. be it an individual, a company or an ethnic group, need to do
more to fully cherish and strengthen our hard-won progress toward a diverse
yet harmonious society.
It is against this backdrop, therefore that we are extremely disappointed
with the systemic and collective failure at ABC to catch and correct such
obviously offensive material. As a world leader. what we do and say does
have global consequences. And many people in this world do look up to the
United States for moral and global leadership. Incidents of this nature,
which do happen periodically, decrease our global appeal, damage our
credibility and hurt our good-standing in the world.
More important than issuing any apology. we ask and demand that ABC
sincerely ask itself the question ‘How could we allow this to happen?‘ and
‘What can we do to prevent it from happening again?,' start a dialogue
with the Chinese and Asian American communities, and come up with an
actionable remedial plan. Should ABC ever be able to achieve that. it will
turn this d chapter into a teachable moment for all
of us. and set itself as a line example of a responsible corporate citizen.
Sincerely.
Haipei Shue
President. NCCA

Dear Haipei Shue:
The National Council of Chinese Americans (NCCA) is a formidable and well
respected organization with a history of advocacy for the Chinese and Asian
communities in the United States. We welcome your organization in the
discussion around the Jimmy Kimmel Live segment that aired on October 16,
2013.
We have already begun to address concerns:
- We have been in conversations with several Asian Advocacy groups since the
airing of the segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
- We have removed all links to that segment on all ABC owned platforms as
well, we have removed that segment for any further rebroadcasts of that
episode.
- On October 28, Mr. Kimmel made a formal apology on the national broadcast
of Jimmy Kimmel Live.
- We have agreed to meet with Organizations representing the Chinese and
Asian communities to discuss ways to insure that this type of rhetoric is
not allowed to air on ABC in the future.
- Paul Lee, President ABC Entertainment has written an apology letter to The
Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles
We will continue to work with members of the Chinese-American and Asian Paci
fic Islander communities to insure that this situation does not occur
again.
Sincerely,
Tim McNeal
