We suppose this is part of the big Year of Action: Using the force of
government to punish business. Considering his approval is at an all-time
low, this should really help.
President Obama this week will seek to force American businesses to pay
more overtime to millions of workers, the latest move by his administration
to confront corporations that have had soaring profits even as wages have
stagnated.
On Thursday, the president will direct the Labor Department to revamp
its regulations to require overtime pay for several million additional fast-
food managers, loan officers, computer technicians and others whom many
businesses currently classify as “executive or professional” employees to
avoid paying them overtime, according to White House officials briefed on
the announcement.
Mr. Obama’s decision to use his executive authority to change the
nation’s overtime rules is likely to be seen as a challenge to Republicans
in Congress, who have already blocked most of the president’s economic
agenda and have said they intend to fight his proposal to raise the federal
minimum wage to $10.10 per hour from $7.25.
Mr. Obama’s action is certain to anger the business lobby in Washington
, which has long fought for maximum flexibility for companies in paying
overtime.
Class warfare from a guy who just returned from a luxury golf vacation and
then immediately went to New York for a $32,500 per plate fundraiser Tuesday
night. Of course all this will do is eliminate jobs, but let’s not quibble
with the details when you’ve got businesses to punish. If we didn’t know
any better we’d think this guy is anti-business.
Conservatives criticized Mr. Obama’s impending action. “There’s no
such thing as a free lunch,” said Daniel Mitchell, a senior fellow with the
Cato Institute, who warned that employers might cut pay or use fewer
workers. “If they push through something to make a certain class of workers
more expensive, something will happen to adjust.”
The move was hailed by Obama zombies:

Sure it is. Good luck paying for you ObamaCare when you’re laid off from
your job thanks to Obama forcing your employer to pay you more. Anyone who
thinks businesses simply won’t eliminate overtime is living in a fantasy
world.
