SEOUL—South Korea's transport ministry said on Thursday it would fine
Hyundai Motor Co. 005380.SE +0.44% and Ssangyong Motor Co. 003620.SE
+0.47% for overstating the fuel economy of their sport-utility vehicles.
The decision by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, however,
comes as another government branch that also regulates the auto industry
offered its own test results approving the stated mileage claims by the
companies.
Both auto makers expressed regret over the rulings and said they would
consider requesting another round of tests.
The transport ministry said the companies have exaggerated the fuel
efficiency of their SUVs—the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Ssangyong Korando
Sports—by as much as 8% and should be subject to fines.
The ministry didn't specify the amount of penalties, but according to
regulations Hyundai could face a fine of up to 1 billion won ($980,500),
while Ssangyong could be ordered to pay 200 million won.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said its own tests
showed the mileages of the vehicles were within the acceptable margin of
error. The discrepancies come from different testing methods and standards,
the trade ministry said.
"We are very confused by the fine and the different results announced by the
related government ministries and regret the discrepancy," Hyundai said in
a statement.
Hyundai, the world's fifth-largest auto maker when combined with its
affiliate Kia Motors Corp. 000270.SE +2.57% , has been dealing with
issues over exaggerated mileage claims in its cars.
The company said in March it had overstated the fuel efficiency of its new
flagship Sonata sedan and issued an apology, dealing a blow to its
credibility after it admitted in 2012 exaggerating fuel economy figures for
autos in the U.S.
In November of 2012, Hyundai and Kia admitted to overstating fuel-mileage
figures for about 900,000 autos sold in the U.S. for model years 2011-13.
The companies later agreed to pay up to $395 million to consumers as part of
a settlement. Hyundai blamed procedural errors at the time. | n****g 发帖数: 14743 | 2 罪有应得!
