"It’s a good deal, a deal that meets our core objectives"
President Barack Obama pressed his case for what he called a “good deal”
with Iran on Saturday.
In a weekly address posted to the White House website, Obama reiterated the
argument he made in a public address on Thursday after both sides announced
that negotiators had reached a framework agreement for a final deal on Iran
’s nuclear program, due by June 30.

So what does the framework agreement say?
According to the framework agreement, Iran agreed to cut by two-thirds its
supply of centrifuges, from roughly 19,000 to about 6,000, and retain only
its earliest generation centrifuges. It said it would keep continuing
enrichment far below levels necessary for a nuclear weapon and also agreed
to reduce its stockpile of enriched uranium by 97%.
But exactly how it plans to scrap its extra centrifuges and enriched uranium
is the kind of question negotiators will be answering over the next three
months. Finally, Tehran pledged to give the International Atomic Energy
Agency access to all of its nuclear facilities and to its nuclear supply
chain. “If Iran cheats, the world will know,” Obama said.
The U.S., the United Nations and the European Union will lift nuclear-
related sanctions once Iran is deemed to have complied with its side of the
bargain; American sanctions related to terrorism, human rights abuses and
non-nuclear weapons will remain in place. Meanwhile, the U.S. will be poised
to “snap-back” nuclear sanctions if Iran backpedals.
What do opponents of a deal say?
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been a staunch critic of
the negotiations, came out swinging after the framework agreement was
reached. “The proposed agreement would constitute a real danger to the
region and the world, and it would threaten the existence of Israel,” said
Netanyahu, who was re-elected last month. An official close to his office
went even further, saying the framework agreement “kowtows to Iranian
dictates.”
Opponents say in part that a one-year breakout time is insufficient, giving
the U.S. and its allies too little time to react if Iran does race to build
a nuclear weapon. They also raise concerns that no matter what access Iran
gives IAEA inspectors, they could still attempt to build a weapon without
inspectors or U.S. intelligence finding out. “We are all concerned that the
Iranians will circumvent the deal,” said Israeli politician Yair Lapid, a
leading Netanyahu opponent who still says the deal is troubling to all
Israelis.
In the U.S., Republicans, with some support from Democrats, have lined up a
bill that will effectively require Congressional approval for a nuclear deal
by giving legislators the power to reject lifting sanctions on Iran. The
White House opposes the perceived interference from Congress and has said it
would veto such a bill. “If Congress kills this deal, not based on expert
analysis, and without offering any reasonable alternative, then it’s the
United States that will be blamed for the failure of diplomacy,
international unity will collapse, and the path to conflict will widen,”
Obama said.
Other lawmakers appear willing to hear out the administration when the
negotiators reconvene on April 13, albeit with a heavy dose of skepticism:

A-Bomb.

Israel official: Military action against Iran still possible

JERUSALEM (AP) — A senior Israeli government minister on Monday said taking
military action against Iran's nuclear program is still an option —
despite last week's framework deal between world powers and the Islamic
Republic.
The comments made by Yuval Steinitz, Israel's minister for strategic affairs
, reflected the sense of alarm in Israel over last week's deal, which offers
Iran relief from economic sanctions in exchange for scaling back its
suspect nuclear program. Israeli leaders believe the framework leaves too
much of Iran's nuclear infrastructure intact and would allow the country to
develop the means to produce a nuclear weapon.
Steinitz, a confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's, said the
government would spend the coming months lobbying the world powers
negotiating with Iran to strengthen the language in the deal as they hammer
out a final agreement. While stressing that Israel prefers a diplomatic
solution, he said the "military option" still exists.
"It was on the table. It's still on the table. It's going to remain on the
table," Steinitz told reporters. "Israel should be able to defend itself, by
itself, against any threat. And it's our right and duty to decide how to
defend ourselves, especially if our national security and even very
existence is under threat."

Israel details requirements for final nuclear deal with Iran
April 6, 2015 11:20am
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel has created a list of modifications it says are
needed in a final deal with Iran over its nuclear program.
The list was presented Monday by Yuval Steinitz, Israel’s minister of
intelligence and strategic affairs, to reporters at a hotel in Jerusalem,
The New York Times reported.
Steinitz said the modifications to the agreement, which is scheduled to be
finalized by the end of June, will make it more acceptable to Israel.
Among the requirements, according to The New York Times, is ending Iranian
research and development on advanced centrifuges; closing the underground
Fordo facility; requiring Iran to disclose past nuclear activities with
military uses; and requiring Iran to allow nuclear inspectors into the
country “anytime, anywhere.”
Steinitz said Israel had put forth an alternative to the framework agreement
announced last week.

State Dept. rejects demand that Iran recognize Israel in nuclear deal
April 5, 2015 7:41am
(JTA) — The U.S. State Department rejected a demand by Israel’s Cabinet
that a final nuclear deal with Iran include “a clear and unambiguous
Iranian recognition” of Israel’s right to exist.
“This is an agreement that is only about the nuclear issue,” State
Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said on Friday night. “We have
purposefully kept that separate from every other issue. That issue is
complicated enough to deal with on its own.”

(Dianne
