Already under attack in courts to mapping a plan to exempt up to 5 million
illegal immigrants from deportation, now the public has turned on President
Obama, with the highest number ever saying that he doesn't have the legal
authority to do what he wants.
A new Rasmussen Reports poll released Tuesday said that 59 percent of voters
believe the president doesn't have legal standing while just 25 percent say
he does. "That's up from 52 percent in February and a high to date," said
the poll analysis.
Overall, 56 percent oppose the president's plan to let some illegals stay
and apply for jobs. That's up from 51 percent in February.
What's more, the public appears to want Congress and Obama to figure out a
plan for illegals together. Rasmussen said that 61 percent of voters believe
the government should only do what the president and Congress agree on when
it comes to immigration. However, both sides are miles apart on a deal.
There are 26 states challenging Obama's plan in court, claiming he doesn't
have the constitutional authority to stop deportations.
The national survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted on April 19-20 by
Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points
with a 95 percent level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports
surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.
