Under the supervise of Prof. ZHANG Lixin
Research on the thesis ”First principle study of phosphorous incorporation
in (111) and (001)
crystal surfaces of diamond”
 Used first principle method to investigate the formation energy of
single phosphorous atom
incorporation on (111) and (001) crystal surfaces of diamond with VASP codes
. (Built models in
Materials Studio 5.0)
 My calculation results show the trend that incorporation in (111)
is much harder than that in (001) due
to the comparison of formation energy of the two crystal surfaces. Due to
machine time limit, only
these two situations are studied. More situations with different
incorporation positions and multi-atom
incorporation should be considered to confirm a conclusion of the inferior
of the (111) crystal surface
in Phosphorous incorporation.

Scholarship in
Science and Technology) student
Worked with Dr. LIU Peng on the project “Computational Modeling of Wrapping
of Nanotubes by
Conducting Polymers”
 Performed DFT(Density Functional Theory) calculation of binding
energy of complex of polymer and
SWNT and did energy decomposition analysis using Q-Chem. We try to explain
the selectivity of poly
(dithiafulvalence-fluorene-co-m-thiophene)s wrapping on sc-SWNTs (
semiconducting Single-Walled
Carbon Nanotubes) using DFT calculation.
 My calculation has revealed the role of side chains in the wrapping
process is significant and the
diameters of SWNTs is more crucial in the selectivity of wrapping than the
electronic structures of
SWNTs (whether it is semiconducting or metallic, or say only the electronic
types are not enough to
determine the selectivity), which is innovative and even contradicts the
previous work3.

Worked on an experiment “Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) Tip
Construction and Imaging of
Graphite Surface”
 Constructed STM tips by electrochemical etching of Tungsten wire.
 Diagnosed and repaired the faults in piezoelectric ceramic driver
circuit when our STM (Ds-89s,
Peking University) didn’t worked during our experiments.
 Operated STM to image the surface of graphite standard sample and
analyzed the images of graphite
surface.

Incorporation Features in
Diamond Films: ab initio Calculations”
 Performed DFT calculation on the chemical potential of Boron simple
substance using VASP as part
of the calculation for the formation energy for Boron monomers and dimers
defects formed at (100)
and (111) crystal surfaces with different hydrogen coverage.
 Investigated the relationship of the formation of Boron defects (
monomers & dimers), hydrogen
coverage, and doping locations (different crystal surfaces).

Designed and did experiments on “The Manufacture of Simple Circuit and the
Performance Test of
Piezoelectric Ceramics using Michelson Interferometer”
 Learned circuit welding
 Designed and welded a D.C. regulated power supply using bridge
rectifier circuit, capacitor filter and
LM317 constant control circuit. Our circuit can convert 220V commercial
power into D.C. regulated
power which is able to be tuned from 5V to 25V.
 Set up a Michelson Interferometer to measure the displacement of
piezoelectric ceramics.
 Combined a Light Power Meter, a Michelson Interferometer and the D.
C. regulated power circuit with
piezoelectric ceramics into a system to accurately measure the displacement
of piezoelectric ceramics
and curve fit the relationship of displacement and voltage added on the
piezoelectric ceramics.

In Electromagnetics, I did a project “Using Imaging Method to Simulate the
Electrostatic Field
Distribution in the System of Two Charged Conducting Spheres”, I used
mirror charge method to
simulate the electrostatic potential of two charged conducting spheres and
three charged
conducting spheres using Mathematica.
In Optics, I self-designed, modified or improved nine optical experiments to
investigate optical
problems like measuring refractive index with different methods, generation
of optical vortex by
dislocations produced by a pair of flat mirrors, generation, detection of
elliptical polarized beam
and measuring the principle axis etc.
In Solid State Physics, I did a project “Tight Binding Method in
Calculating the Electronic
Properties of Graphene”. I used tight binding method to calculate band
structure of graphene using
MatLab and compared the results with DFT calculation using Dmol3 in
Materials Studio 5.0.

1 Po-ling Class: also called Boling Class, founded in 2009 as part of
Project of Elite Students Cultivation for Fundamental
Disciplines. Students selected from ordinary programs make up this class and
they have different trainings in order to be
future leaders in fundamental sciences. They have special curricula and
English classes taught by native speakers. There is
a competitive mechanism for students in this class. In each semester
students in this class are evaluated by their
academic and research-related performance and students whose performance are
not well enough to be qualified would
be eliminated from this class and excellent students in ordinary Physics
program would be selected into this class. Usually
one or two students change would take place in a semester. Before entering
the junior year, there is a reselection among
all the students in the class. Currently, I am one the five original
students surviving from the first group of 25 students
who were selected into this program when entering Nankai University as
freshmen.
2 CSST(Cross-disciplinary Scholarship in Science and Technology) is a summer
research program host by UCLA and
CNSI(California Nanosystem Institute) which selects excellent undergraduate
students from nine top universities in
China(Peking University, Nankai University, Fudan University, USTC, Zhejiang
University, Xi’ an Jiaotong University,
Nanjing University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Sichuan University) to do
summer research at UCLA.

exhibited by presentation or thesis. It usually
accounts a certain proportion of the final grades in the course.
