BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — During an investigation into a food stamp scheme,
police say they seized over $22,000 in cash, firearms and untaxed cigarettes
, leading to the arrest of three brothers.
Officers in Orleans County say they worked from July through October to
gather evidence on the scheme and the sale of untaxed cigarettes at the
Murray Superette. While investigating, officers say they found that three
brothers, identified as Alexander R. Salamaca, Myron B. Salamaca and Olec L.
Salamaca, bought food stamps off of people in the food stamp program for 70
percent of their dollar value, allowing customers to buy items not
permitted for sale under food stamp regulations.
Customers taking part in the alleged Salamaca scheme reportedly purchased
both cigarettes and untaxed cigarettes, lottery tickets and gasoline.
On Tuesday, police say they raided the homes of the Salamaca brothers,
finding evidence of the alleged scheme, including 64 cartons of untaxed
cigarettes, $22,000 in cash, a loaded handgun, several rifles and shotguns,
financial records, New York State benefits cards and pin numbers, computers
and an EBT terminal. | l******a
