I wonder if this is an American homeless problem specifically? Our poverty
levels/experiences are still far above other countries from what I'm told
and I wouldn't be surprised if it's just our homeless that respond this way.
Any sociologists or anthropologists around this thread??

Anthropologist here! Holy shit, someone actually needs me for once!!! My
degree can't answer your question, but I have some thoughts:
1) In the US and the rest of the Western world, it's way more likely,
relative to the developing world, for someone to be homeless due at least in
part to mental or emotional issues (rather than due solely to extreme
poverty).
2) As an experienced traveler in the developing world, I can at least tell
you anecdotally that plenty of beggars behave the same way in poor countries. |
