The three front-runners for President Donald Trump’s U.S. Supreme Court
nomination to be announced next week appear to qualify as millionaires,
according to their most recent financial disclosure forms.
Federal appeals court judges William Pryor Jr., Neil Gorsuch, and Thomas
Hardiman—who have emerged as top contenders from Trump's original list of
21 possible nominees, according to numerous media reports—filed their 2015
reports with the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts last year, all of
them reflecting investments valued at more than $1 million. The exact value
of their investments is impossible to discern from the forms because they
are listed in ranges.
Almost all of the investments reported by Gorsuch and Pryor are in mutual
funds or similar instruments that usually do not cause recusals—unlike
individual stocks, which can cause trouble when a company whose stock they
own comes before them. Hardiman has considerably more individual stock
holdings, which could draw attention during confirmation hearings if he is
nominated.
The reports also offer numerous nuggets of information including their
outside income and even gifts they receive. Here is a rundown of their forms:
William Pryor Jr.
An Eleventh Circuit judge whose chambers are in Birmingham, Alabama, Pryor
reported investments totaling up to $1.9 million in his2015 financial
disclosure form, which he submitted last December. (Their value is listed in
ranges, so the actual total could be less.) Most are Fidelity and Vanguard
funds. In 2015he reportedthat his former law clerks gave him a bust
of Alexander Hamilton, valued at $2,867, for his chambers to celebrate his
10-year anniversary on the Eleventh Circuit. As with other appeals court
judges, Pryor received off-the-bench income by teaching. In 2015 the
University of Alabama School of Law paid him $12,000 as a visiting professor
, where he teaches a seminar on interpreting legal texts. Samford University
Cumberland School of Law, where he has taught admiralty law, paid him $7,
500. He received $5,000 from West Publishing for his contribution to the
2016 bookThe Law of Judicial Precedent. Pryor also reported that the
Federalist Society reimbursed him for travel, lodging and meals at two
events in 2015—one at Yale Law School, and the other at the society’s
annual convention.
Neil Gorsuch
According tohis 2015 report, the Denver-based Tenth Circuit judge has
investments that total as much as $7.2 million. (They are listed in ranges,
so the actual value could be lower.) Most of his holdings are in bond and
mutual funds through USAA, as well as two dozen Colorado municipal bonds.
The University of Colorado Law School paid him $26,000 for teaching last
year. He has recently taught courses on legal ethics and antitrust. He also
received $304 in royalties for the 2006 book he wrote titledThe Future
of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia, in which he argues against laws
permitting assisted suicide. West Publishing also paid Gorsuch $5,000 last
year. He was one of 12 co-authors, along with Juge Pryor, of West’sThe
Law of Judicial Precedent.Gorsuch attended “Renaissance Weekend” in
Jackson Hole, Wyoming in 2015, a program that has roots in the Clinton
administration but with bipartisan participation and “no political or
commercial agenda,” according to itsweb site. He has also listed his
membership in the Denver-based “Walden Group LLC (Mountain Property)” and
on the University of Chicago Law School’s visiting committee. In 2012, he

2reported a giftof “hospitality” valued at $1,175, from Michael
Trent
, who is not otherwise identified.
Thomas Hardiman:
As ofthe last reporting period, the Pittsburgh-based Third Circuit judge
holds stocks and other investments worth upwards of nearly $22 million.
Some of his more valuable investments include multi-million dollar holdings
with FC Donegal Associates and Lord Abbett Investment Trust in New Jersey.
He also reported investments in General Electric, Apple, Time Warner,
General Motors, Goldman Sacks and Berkshire Hathaway, among others. Before
becoming a judge, Hardiman was active in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater
Pittsburgh and he has continued that involvement as a director of the
organization. He also is an adjunct professor—pro bono—at Duquesne
University School of Law in Pittsburgh, where he teaches advanced
constitutional law. He reported no liabilities in the last three years and
no outside income other than that of his wife. He also holds an honorary
membership valued at $750 in the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny
County.In July 2012, he was reimbursed for transportation, food and
lodging for a week of lectures in Italy, sponsored by Duquesne law school.
