“Unfortunately I threw my teammates under the bus, unintentionally,”
Villanueva said. “Every single time I see that picture of me standing by
myself I feel embarrassed.”
He told reporters that he had asked Steelers’ quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger if he could lead the team out of the tunnel with the captains
, but the plan was messed up due to confusion at the end of the tunnel,
reports said.
“When we came out of the locker room into that tunnel, it was a very
small area. There was a flag or something coming off the field so there were
a bunch of Bears fans, coming off the field holding that going in front of
us, so it kind of held us up,” he said.

” Villanueva said. “We as a team tried to figure it out, but obviously

President Trump put NFL teams in an impossible position this past weekend,
regarding a specific reaction to our national anthem.
The Pittsburgh Steelers decided to remain indoors in an attempt to avoid a
political situation they couldn’t win. Their goal was to show unity as a
team. Even though they were not all in agreement, they wanted to act as one.
When the time came to play the national anthem before the game, the Steelers
remained inside. All but one. I get it. Alejandro Villanueva was the
patriot. When the time came, he was the only player stabnding outside.
The optics were terrific for Villanueva, but he has expressed regret for
unintentionally throwing his team under the bus. I would expect many others
on the team are just as patriotic as he is but felt that on this day it was
important to show unity.
I honor and am grateful for Villanueva’s service to our country. I applaud
his devotion to our flag, but I would not want him on my team.
