The Obama administration has already expelled about 3.7 million people who
were living here illegally between 2009 and 2013. While the pace of
deportations has slowed dramatically, with a shift in enforcement towards
weeding out those who have actually committed crimes in America, the
Migration Policy Institute estimates that several hundred thousand children
have either one or no parents in America as a result. And 5.3 million
children are still living with unauthorized parents, constantly under threat
of losing one or both.

If the adult then wants to go home, in keeping with the expedited order of
removal that is issued as a matter of course, it’s relatively simple. The
adult should be reunited quickly with his or her child, and the family
returned home as a unit. In this scenario, there’s only a very brief
separation.
Where it becomes much more of an issue is if the adult files an asylum claim
. In that scenario, the adults are almost certainly going to be detained
longer than the government is allowed to hold their children.
That’s because of something called the Flores Consent Decree from 1997. It
says that unaccompanied children can be held only 20 days. A ruling by the
Ninth Circuit extended this 20-day limit to children who come as part of
family units. So even if we want to hold a family unit together, we are
forbidden from doing so.
A few points about all this:
1) Family units can go home quickly.
2) There’s a better way to claim asylum
3) There is a significant moral cost to not enforcing the border.
4) Congress can fix this.

发帖数: 5818 | 4 虽然是 炮制的，但 民主党 左媒这次 还是有 moral 制高点， 估计 trump 未必 能顶
住，GOP 里边分化很列害，
看后续发展吧，
民主党 搞政治斗争 还是有一套，右派 不行，光会讲道理，讲法制！
且美国 普通民众 一直有 moral 情怀，尤其 那些信教的，这些还是 GOP 选民 ！
所以，我看 trump 他们这次 顶不了 多久。
媒体，每天发一，两个 孩子 哭叫的照片，就行了。
