STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- When Vickie Natale started researching the 2020
Democratic presidential candidates in August, she had no idea that three
months later she’d be performing at a rally for one of them.
Natale, 38, said she wanted to be more involved and knowledgable about
politics for next year’s presidential election.
But it didn’t take long before she heard Andrew Yang give an interview on a
morning radio program, and Natale says she was immediately hooked.
“One of the reasons I was not into politics was because there is always so
much fighting and so much negativity,” Natale told the Advance. “I liked [
that Yang] put humanity first.”
Natale, a voice and piano teacher, then did what comes naturally to her:
sitting down at a piano and singing.
She recorded herself and tweeted out her new song, inspired by Yang and
titled “Forward-Humanity First.”
“Yang retweeted and said thank you,” Natale said, and the tweet went viral.
“I am not famous and I’m just an independent artist but he thought ‘this
message is beautiful’ and thanked me for it,” she said.
A TRIP TO IOWA, AND AN INVITATION
Later in his campaign, Yang encouraged supporters to donate by promising he
would try to personally call each of them.
On Halloween, just one day before Natale and her boyfriend James McCrae were
scheduled to fly to Des Moines, Iowa to support Yang, McCrae’s phone rang.
Yang was on the other end of the line.
Thrilled, Natale got on the phone, and after the two talked for a bit, she
sang “Forward-Humanity First” for him.
The conversation ended with an official invitation for her to perform the
song at Yang’s rally in Des Moines.
On Friday the couple flew to Iowa, and were finally able to meet with Yang
and Natale performed for the crowd.
Natale and Yang posed together for a picture where she is wearing a hat that
reads MATH: Make America Think Harder -- one of Yang’s mottos.
“I looked into his eyes and I thought ‘you really mean humanity first,’”
Natale said.
