The image of now-fired Hmong American police officer Tou Thao, standing with
his back turned as George Floyd died last Monday in Minneapolis police
custody, has ignited a discussion around how to approach the topic of anti-
blackness in the Asian American community.
Thao has been described by activists as a symbol of Asian American
complicity in anti-blackness following the death of Floyd, a black man who
begged for his life while then-officer Derek Chauvin dug his knee into his
neck.

“Here it comes. Asian Americans run counter to their narrative that all
minorities struggle to succeed in the US due to systemic racism. It’s
amazing what emphasizing family values and education can achieve in the US.
Asian Americans have the highest income per capita of any group in the US.”

Why?
Because you want to make sure that people focus on race rather than the
issues?

Before using Tuo Thao as a representative of historical tensions and a
historical narrative, the author should have explained why this is actually
accurate and representative. There are many competing reasons for Thao's
inaction. This article, in short, uses Thao's race in the same way that the
author argues against: as a simplification of complex actions and reasons. |
