TAIPEI—The World Health Organization endorsed a second Chinese vaccine
against Covid-19 on Tuesday, in a bid to get more shots to the developing
world.
The international health body said it approved CoronaVac, a vaccine by
private vaccine maker Sinovac BioTech Ltd. for emergency use, paving the way
for Covax, an international body co-led by WHO, to distribute doses.
“The world desperately needs multiple Covid-19 vaccines to address the huge
access inequity across the globe,” said Dr. Mariângela Simão,
WHO’s assistant-director general for access to health products.
The vaccine is the seventh one against the new coronavirus that WHO has
approved for global use. It came after WHO officials delayed their decision
to seek out more data regarding the safety of the shot and Sinovac’s
manufacturing process, to assess whether the firm was compliant with WHO
