Introduction
This is the results of a simple test comparing the speeds of three text editors (vi, emacs, and ed) in performing a simple
substitution task. We find that emacs is an order of magnitude slower than the other editors.
The task
1.Start the editor.
2.Replace ':' with '|' throughout the file.
3.Quit the editor without saving changes.
The file is a copy of /etc/passwd (actually ypcat passwd on my system) with 503 lines and 3018 occurences of ': |
