I am on H1B visa now without green card and I am in the process of a new H1B
application for a new job.
For some personal reason, I want to go back to China for a short while, say,
a week. Is it too risky to do that as to visa issue?

I think you should be fine as long as your current H1B (with the current
company) is still valid.
