. Can understand and speak a little 北方話, 閩語, 湘語, 客家話, 赣语.
I am also fluent in French, German, Spanish and can speak some Russian and
Hindi and Arabic.

is now busy with her kids and work.
I am on sabbatical right now, so my sister give me a few sites to visit in
case I got bored, and she knows I like my kids to interact with other
chinese kids.
So this board become one of the few I begin to visit on daily basis now (at
least for a while)

虽说俺曾经梦想过让俺BB学至少4种语言，
不过语言这东西除了环境，还是要有天份的。
俺们一家都没那天份。。。

learn to speak English after I go to school (day care), I also picked up
spanish from other kids in school. I studied a little french in high school
and a little german in college.
I was recruited into a special new hire problem, that put me in a rotation
program for the first 6 year (1 year in each division/office which happen to
be in six different countries), that way it will give me experience about
the company and how each division operated. After that is over, I was
assigned to work in China for a while due to that fact I can speak Chinese,
I traveled to different parts of china and picked up more dialects from
local people.
If you want your kids to learn more language, it is best to start young (
before 18 month according some studies). It is ok to only talk to your kids
in chinese at home until they go to school (they will speak english with an
accent in the beginning, but it will go away very quickly), that way your
kids are at least bilingual without much effort. Teach them to read and
write chinese can be difficult, but if you insist, they can be good (enough)
. If they can not write, make sure they can at least speak and read.

maybe after I am on here for a while. My job also be busy sometime along
with 4 kids I got, not sure I can dedicate enough time to serve here. I will
give some thinking about. Another thing, I am not sure how long we will
live in DC area.

However things are not as easy as you said. We do not have a Chinese-
speaking environment at home (my husband only speaks English). It was easier
for me to speak Chinese before my daughter started talking. Now she is 25-
month old and has quickly picked up English from the daycare and her dad. I
am out-numbered by the English speakers in her life. She starts showing
clear preference to English. Sadly, I found myself speaking English too just
trying to get her attention more quickly, or to better communicate with her
for fear the language barrier would hurt our mother-daughter bond. I am not
an ABC, but to be honest, I myself found it is easier to speak English than
play a mental gymnastic to translate everything into Chinese before opening
my mouth. Now I pretty much give it up. Anybody in the same boat?

发帖数: 1028 | 32 You are a polyglot yourself, that means your kids can do too. It is best to
start young, you should never speak any english to daughter, if she want to
talk to you, she have to speak chinese.
Kids at young age can easily become multilingual, my olderest is brought up
with the help of my mother, she become naturally trilingual, she talk to
grandma in Shanghainese, talk to us (parents) in mandarin, she learns
english from school (day care). We did not have to spend any additional
effort to make her trilingual.
In fact all my children are polyglot without much effort, 2 of them are
showing potential to be hyperpolyglot like me. I do make them go to chinese
school to learn to read and write when they get a little bit older.
So do not give up, it is a gift to your child, and if possible let your
child spend summer in China, it will help a lot.
