Positions: High Throughput Sequencing at the FDA
A conceptually new computational cloud paradigm of High performance
Integrated Virtual Environment (HIVE) is being developed at Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) for
High Throughput Sequencing (HTS) XL-data storage and analysis.
A team of professional Bioinformaticians, DB developers, WEB programmers is
being assembled for this purpose. The team will be responsible for
implementing a Sequence Read Archive (SRA) Library and computational biology
analytics tools within HIVE cloud.
The positions are contractual, offered through ORISE fellowship, extensible
indefinitely on a yearly basis. The offices are located in FDA premises in
Rockville, MD.
1. Bioinformaticians
The functions will include hardcore programming of computational
biology tools, development of new algorithms, adapting existing tools to
the HIVE cloud.
SKILLS
o 10+ years in C/C++ is required
o Expertise in fundamental mathematical models/algorithms
o Solid understanding of bioinformatics concepts: alignments, fuzzy
logic, strings and trees, sequences, clustering methods, biostatistics
o Knowledge of design patterns is a plus
o Ability to work in different operating systems: Linux, Windows,
Mac; development environments: Visual Studio, Eclipse, GCC/GDB;
o Experience in developing parallel and/or multithreaded programs
o Understanding of client/server infrastructure
o Experience with Java, SQL, scripting languages is a plus
BACKGROUND
o Scientific background in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or
Biology is a significant plus.
o Having publications in per/review journals is a significance
advantage
ENVIRONMENT
o Ability to work in a collaborative team of highly skilled
professionals is a must
o Ability to independently work on parts of a project and implement
/maintain libraries and tools associated with sub-projects is a key
o Will be interacting with scientist and regulatory personnel to
understand and translate requirements into computationally executable tasks
2. Database specialists
The functions will include implementation and management of
distributed redundant clustered data storage system including the design of
databases, delocalized file archive control infrastructures. Also work with
programmers to provide data access facilities as C/C++ API libraries.
SKILLS
o 10+ years in SQL database design and maintenance.
o Experience with MySQL is required
o Knowledge of MySQL Cluster is a plus.
o Experience with Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL is a plus
o C/C++ or other object oriented languages are a plus
o Familiar with fundamental mathematical models/algorithms
o Ability to work with extra large scale datasets in distributed
environments
o Ability to work in different operating systems: Linux, Windows,
Mac;
o Experience in developing parallel and/or multithreaded programs
is a plus
o Understanding of security protocols and encryption technologies
is a plus.
BACKGROUND
o Scientific background in Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Physics,
Chemistry or Biology is a plus.
o Having publications in per/review journals is a plus
ENVIRONMENT
o Ability to work in a collaborative team of highly skilled
professionals is a must
3. Web-programmers
The functions will include development and maintenance of front/back end web
components for the portal based on Google WebToolkit. Development of tools
and web interfaces for online scientific apps and pipelines.
SKILLS
o 10+ years in web programming
o 5+ years in C/C++ and Java is required
o Solid understanding of web programming languages and protocols
o Familiarity with Google Web Toolkit and Google Visualization
tools
o Ability to work in different operating systems: Linux, Windows,
Mac
BACKGROUND
o Scientific background in Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Physics,
Chemistry or Biology is a plus.
o Having publications in per/review journals is a plus
ENVIRONMENT
o Ability to work in a collaborative team of highly skilled
professionals is a must
