系主任商量，这学期暂时还给我funding。
现在我应该怎么办呀？导师有权利这样做吗？按照学校规定我是合格的呀。 |

Take it easy. The previous message suggesting working hard on coding and a
master degree is right. For most people, earning a Ph.D. in Engineering only
trains them the ability to convince themselves that earning it is
worthwhile. When you step out of the campus, you will know that the effort
of publishing papers and dissertation is nothing.
If you care about economic return, then perhaps the only worthwhile degrees
come from Medical School, Law School and Business School. Even for Computer
Science, it still depends on your research direction. If you don't believe
me, go to a commencement and take a look on how many engineering Ph.D. are
graduating each year. The more graduated, the less valuable the degree is.
In my eyes, a EE master + an MBA pay you much better.
If you are a Niu Ren, you don' t need a Ph.D. to prove that; if you are
unfortunately not one, like me, a Ph.D. title does not help either. You can
certainly consider investing your time on work experience, networking,
professional major degrees, etc.
Several years ago, I got an offer to the US for a Ph.D. and my friend said
he got a son. Now, I got my Ph.D. and landed on a mediocre job and my friend
's so is going to a primary school. Several years ago, I was respected to
have a dream. But the dream lasts for too long. Is it worthwhile?
Last Thanksgiving holidays, I met a full professor in my department in
school. I wondered why he was there. He said that he is working on his new
book. I asked him the question: is it worthwhile to lead an academic life,
at the costs of fighting for teaching, coaching Ph.D., applying fundings,
etc. You know what? He said that to grow up, sometimes you must learn to
avoid questions that you don't like to think over.
That is the truth. In many cases, what we need is only a reason to be happy.
Whether the reason really makes sense does not matter; you need to learn to
get these reasons when things do not go your way. |

Along with the inner recognition--recognizing your ability in doing great
job, you should consider the outter value system too. For example, what kind
of social resources can a degree trade you for? There are far less M.D. in
this world and therefore to obtain an M.D. leads to the door of more social
resources, like money and social status. If you work on an exclusive field
in EE and your contributions can trade you exclusive resources, e.g.
research project of a big company and accesses to executive people,
opportunities to do a start-up, etc., you may consider pursuing the Ph.D.,
even it is in Engineering School. If there are tons of people in your area
and you are only one out of one million people working there, then, the gain
from a Ph.D. is marginal. Considering the implicit costs, you may consider
alternatives.
Most Chinese students do their Ph.D. not because of substantial outter
recognition values. Don't tell me that your parents want that -- their
opinions should not affect you at your age. I know people working in my
major who started on a field with few competitors but high market potential.
They have a successful a career, more successful than most Chinese expect.
Yes, we are engineers and so what? Their got their own patent and earn a lot
! With their success, they even get to network with more important people.
That is the real value of being a Ph.D. Few master degree graduates in my
major have the access to that.
BTW, the chance for more publications is not necessarily a good one. Note,
there are research directions with which you can win more publications. My
friend's friend did his EE Ph.D. in China. He got some good ideas and he
sold his ideas well. His company is going to IPO soon. That is also a
successful Ph.D. story.
All in all, don't care much about your advisor's comments on you. Her/is
opinion is personal and may change with time and Sh/e may not even be a
successful Ph.D. at all. Think, can a professor in a mediocre schoo,
publishing mediocre papers without any good ideas be called successful?
Unfortunately, most professors are mediocre. One medicore plus another
usually produce a mediocre Ph.D.
Don't get hurt by my bitter words. If you are not mediocre, then stop those
mediocre ideas -- working hard to make a mediocre people think that you are
brilliant. Be brave and figure out your own way. Nothing is guaranteed, but
nothing is impossible!

Maybe you are not of Ph.D. quality in her eye, not just because of failing
in the qualification exam.
If you really want a Ph.D. degree, talk to other Professors to see if anyone
