Germany orders safety review at nuclear plants
Some 60,000 anti-nuclear protesters took to the streets in Stuttgart – at
least 20,000 more than expected by the organisers – in a grim warning to
the government that the issue of nuclear power could decide the outcome of a
pivotal state election there in two weeks’ time.
They joined hands in a mass protest against the planned extension of nuclear
power generation in Germany until 2036, in a deal negotiated by Ms Merkel’
s government with power companies last year.
The chancellor’s centre-right coalition in Berlin of Christian Democrats
and Free Democrats is running neck-and-neck in the state of Baden-Wü
rttemberg with the opposition Social Democratic party (SPD) and Green party,
and any revival of nuclear fears is likely to boost votes, especially for
the environmentalist Greens.
Both SPD and Greens are trying to block the government’s decision to extend
the life of the most modern nuclear stations by 14 years. Under present law
they are all supposed to closed by 2022. |
