American Freedom in a Global Age
ERIC FONER
To be chosen as president of the American Historical
Association is the highest honor that can come to a
historian in the United States. I am extremely grateful to
my colleagues for selecting me as the first AHA
president of the twenty-first century-or, depending on how
one measures the passage of time, the last of the
twentieth.
