American values were born before the United States of America. The act of
venturing to a new world, leaving behind the customs and allegiances of the
past, created an American mind-set and an American society based on the
rights of the individual. By the time of the Declaration of Independence,
the truths about which Thomas Jefferson wrote really were self-evident: All
