Some very distant black holes may be smaller than they seem.
by Vanessa Thomas
During the past few years, as astronomers have begun to find quasars from the
universe's early childhood, a cosmic conundrum has begun to surface. The
luminosities of these remote quasars are so high that they must have
incredibly massive black holes to power them. But no one can figure out how
such supermassive black holes could have developed so soon after the Big Bang.
