NOTE: the website mentioned if you have 1st gen x5 E53 (2001~2006), you can upgrade the firmware and use the 2011 map data they provide all for $50.
you can't do firmware upgrade on iDrive System (X5 E70 2007 ~ 2010). you can only load the new map data dvd, which i assume you could google a torrent, download, burn and try yourself. (keywords are: bmw tele atlas 2011)，dealer price $199.
for X5 2011 onward, the dvd is replaced with hard drive, only dealer can install map after receiving map activation code, $350, but since mostly likely it is still under warranty, you could claim your map software is malfunctioning, dealer will upgrade everything for you to the LATEST.
hopefully hackers could figure out the activation code eventually. | i****e
