very impressed by the stunning scenery, rocks, waterfalls, valleys, rolling
mountains, in the film. You might think the filming took place in the
Adirondack region of upstate New York. It actually was shot at a few
national parks around Ashville, NC. The climax scene was shot at Chimney
Park, a private park.

I believe since middle of 2007 the park is fully owned by the state of North
Carolina.

Privately owned by the Morse family for more than 100 years, Chimney Rock
was acquired by the state of North Carolina in 2007 to become part of a
larger state park dubbed Chimney Rock State Park. Currently, the 1,000-acre
Chimney Rock is the only part of the state park open to the public.
The Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar is actually inspired by sandstone pillars
in WuLingYuan National Park in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. Cameron

I like to travel and take pictures, just so happen I visited that place a
couple years back.
If you are into movie locations, when you visit Chimney Rock, make sure you
spend some time in the nearby lake lure. I know at least two movies was shot
in this area, Dirty Dancing and A Breed Apart.
If your time allow, make sure you visit Dupont State Forest too (lots of
good place to hike)

No wonder many American choose to retire in Ashville, which is close all
those beautiful places.

Probably good for 4 days' trip.
