Jiang Wen's grimly amusing antiwar film "Devils on the Doorstep" is set in an
impoverished farming village in northern China near the Great Wall during the
winter of 1944 and '45. Although the area has been under Japanese occupation
since the 1930's, the villagers have grown to tolerate the occupying "devils,"
who demand a percentage of their grain but otherwise mostly leave them to
