我小孩6年级了, 十分热爱写作, 在电脑前一呆就是好几个小时, 随便就是10 几页的长
篇大作, 但学校的英文成绩却很不理想, 经常是A-, 有时还是B. 我读过她的文章，觉
得就是我们老师说的流水帐,为了改变这种状况,也为了她在写作方面有所发展， 3个月
前我在CRAIGSLIST.ORG登了个广告, 以每小时20元的价格聘请老师, 结果应聘的电子
邮件来了将近 上百份(在美国学文真不容易), 其中很多人的背景都很强, 名校毕业,
大学文学课教授, 作家,等等. 在总多的简历当中,其中一人的电子邮件让其他人的电邮
黯然失色(以下付上邮件), 我决定就是他了. 老师是50多岁年纪的犹太人, 毕业于纽约
大学的电影系, 现在在洛杉矶做一些SCREEN PLAYING的 工作, 我每个星期六带女儿到
El monte的一家Starbucks和他见面, 老先生教学十分认真, 教了小孩很多写作的技巧,

Hello,
I’m writing in regards to your search for a writing tutor for your daughter
. My name is Adam Dancy. I have recently moved from New York City where I
owned a company specializing in media communications for Fortune 100
companies. I have professionally written employee communications, video and
interactive media scripts, speeches, and other materials. I’ve also had
extensive experience writing and designing professional training programs
for the workplace. I’m attaching my resume and portfolio to give you a
better picture of my skills and background.
I’m from a family of writers. My mother was a novelist, a mentee of Saul
Bellow, and a Professor at NYU. My 15-year-old daughter writes Fan Faction
and has recently started blogging. I have also been writing (a novel,
screenplays) throughout my entire life. I’m currently in Los Angeles
finishing a screenplay.
Beginning at the NYU Film School where I studied writing with Richard Price,
I’ve also been actively involved in writers groups. Through countless
hours of dialogs, investigation and discovery with professional colleagues,
I’ve learned that the creative process is inherently ambiguous. It can be
fragile. Certain limits have to be carefully observed to keep the practice
of writing positive and productive.
I believe that writing is one part skill, one part ambition, and two parts
character. It also encompasses a love of language, observational powers,
self-confidence and a lot of hard work. As such, a writer needs to be
encouraged as much as tutored. As the father of a daughter attending one of
the best Honors High Schools in NYC, I also understand how stressful daily
life can be for girls of that age. Most important for a 12-year-old, writing
has to be something she is motivated to do. Something that belongs to her.
Something she loves to do.
Having said this, what you can expect from me is a thoroughly professional
approach to instruction. I’d begin by assessing the student’s skills,
strengths and abilities. I’d give her exercises to help her with vocabulary
, observation and story-telling. I would help her to set her own goals.
Writers are also readers (yes, I’ve read all of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson
, Twilight and many, many others) and we would use our reading as a window
to discuss character, plot and building a narrative.
Whatever professional path you daughter may choose later in her life, the
skill to communicate a thought, an observation or a fact in a clear and
engaging manner will be of tremendous practical benefit to her.
