Andy was very articulate with his answers and his fluency rate was high, so it did not appear that there was a language barrier in communication. The recall questions he missed were because he was not willing or ready to take a risk with an answer he was not sure was correct. He simply would say "I don't know" without trying to give an answer. This behavior is not atypical when I compare it to other students who also took the assessment.
I would like to clarify that I did not give him an ELP assessment. I simply took the benchmarking levels in reading that all teachers use to see how high a student can read. Classroom teachers are asked to stop the assessment when the student demonstrates that he has mastered the grade level. I took the students higher to see where they would end up. Andy was independent at 1st grade.
Next year, my plan is to cluster group Andy with students reading at his similar reading level. That way he will have a group of academic peers in place when he starts the school year.
Thanks for your question. Please let me know if you have other questions in the future. |
