太多问题不清楚，先问两个：
1，申请的时候是申请到学院级别吧？比如申请某校的工程学院，艺术和科学学院等等
。录取不录取是学校决定的还是学院决定的？能被MIT的英美文学系录取不代表能被他
们的工程院录取，我的理解对不对？
2，看入学要求，一般认为SAT和班级排名都很重要，那我的问题是，有两个高中都不错
，一个是A，top 1%, 另一个是B，top 10%,学生C在A校，SAT2200 （模拟，下同），班级top 20%,学生D在B校，SAT2150，班级top 5%,假设其他方面都一样，哪个更容易录取好大学？

马高下立现了。当然私立的生源也会相对好一些，但相对公立的几年没有harvard yale
，而私立的大把的HYPMS，就不单单是生源的问题了。所以这边的公立系统怎么折腾都
有限，真想折腾，就去私立。因为他们的college counselor跟那些名校的admisson关
系更好，有更多的resource。
班级top 20%,学生D在B校，SAT2150，班级top 5%,假设其他方面都一样，哪个更容易录
取好大学？

就是最后一点有些小意见， 不是“college counselor跟那些名校的admisson关系更好
，有更多的resource”， 我觉得还是生源的占主要关系。 如果能把上HYPMS的有
legacy关系的人都去掉， 再来看统计数据，对我们老中会比较有意义
可惜， 没有私校愿意公布这样的数据 :(

Typical Chinese thinking: trying to find a shortcut.
I will try to explain here:
First, there are two types of undergraduate education: liberal arts
education and a more technical one similar to a professional school.
Liberal arts education is a general education and it’s not intended to
prepare you for a job. Most private colleges, liberal arts colleges and ivy
schools belong to this type. Universities/colleges of this kind have
undergraduate part called college. Like Harvard College or Yale College. A
university (I mean undergraduate college) has a few colleges of which
College of Arts and Sciences is usually the largest one (probably 40-60%
freshmen). When you apply for these colleges, you are applying undergraduate
college and the decision is made by this college. Theoretically, the
admitted students can choose any major they want and they wouldn’t need to
make the decision usually until end of the second year. They may ask your
interest when you apply. My thinking is that if you want to get into Harvard
and your interest is in a hot area like in business but you say you are
interested in English/Literature instead, it’s probably a little easier to
get in since college definitely does not want everyone who are interested in
business. But be careful though that your interest should match the areas
you are good at. If your English and writing is not particularly good then
the admission officers will think if you are honest. Also, if you say you
are interested in English then you are going to compete with applicants who
usually are strong in languages then you are in a disadvantageous position.
So if you want to major in business but say you are interested in English
then you had better be good at both.
Some other colleges that are more techy are preparing the graduates to fins
a job. You have to apply to a specific college and different colleges may
have different admission decision. Colombia’s Fu Foundation School of
Engineering is an example. Though the admission rate of Columbia’s
Engineering school is significant higher than College of Arts and Sciences,
but they are just different types of students. I personally think they have
about the same standards. Wharton is a different story though. Penn’s
admission rate is one of the highest in the ivy schools partially probably
because it’s a bigger school. Wharton just stands out in Peen so Wharton is
much tougher to get in. If you are admitted into Penn’s College of Arts
and Sciences and then want to transfer to Wharton, it’s going to be very
tough if not possible. But if you get into Wharton but want to transfer to
College of Arts and Sciences then it’s easy. So nobody can be fooled around
easily.

like the above post said, college of liberty arts has undecided major, but
all the kids i know (and my ld too) went to engineer major or business major
or premed major directly as freshman, those belong to different colleges in
the same university |
