Renewed volcanic ash from Iceland brings new flight cancellations

Travellers were hit with more chaos today as renewed activity from the
Eyjafjallajökull volcano forced a new wave of flight cancellations and
airport closures.
Several flights to and from UK airports were cancelled as new ash clouds
drifted across Europe, while in Scotland four airports were closed.
The Highlands & Islands Airports (HIAL) website said that Kirkwall and
Inverness airports were expected to be shut until 1pm and Benbecula and
Stornoway to be closed until 7pm.
This morning Italian airspace was closed until 9 am, while The Irish
Aviation Authority (IAA) warned that Knock Airport could be closed from 5pm
tonight.
Today Ryanair announced the cancellation of 178 European flights while
easyJet warned of further disruption on routes to and from Switzerland,
Southern and Central France, Northern Italy and Northern Portugal.
At London Stansted Airport, 25 Ryanair flights were cancelled yesterday to
destinations including Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands.
The airline announced this morning that it would be cancelling a further
eight flights from the airport, with three more from Edinburgh, two from
Liverpool, and another from Bristol. Several flights from Italy were also
cancelled. The airline said that it expected to announce further
cancellations later today.
Meanwhile easyJet was forced to cancel five flights yesterday and extra
flights were being put on between Tenerife and London Stansted to clear the
backlog of passengers affected by yesterday’s cancellations.
At Gatwick, six easyJet services were grounded while four flights to
Alicante, Madrid and Barcelona were cancelled.
Italian airspace was closed for several hours this morning, prompting the
cancellation of “a small number of flights” from Italy, according to a
spokesman from Heathrow.
Transatlantic flights were being delayed as aircraft changed their flight
paths to avoid another, higher level ash cloud. Aircraft were grounded for
an extra 10 to 15 minutes because of the diversions.
The chaos could continue for several days if northerly winds move ash over
western Scotland and Ireland, although clouds were not likely to drift
across the rest of the UK.
The Met Office said it was likely that an area of low pressure would move
the ash cloud away from the UK and Ireland on Wednesday, while ash would
move towards the South of France from Spain over the next few days.
This morning a spokesman for BAA advised passengers to check with their
operator before departing for the airport. | s**d
