In 2007, I was a member of the Blockbuster DVD rental service. I hated the way they charged for
rentals. Unless you have a big family or friend network to share your cost,
it makes no sense to pay ~5 bucks to keep the DVD for 5 days.
In 2008, I registered an account with Netflix(NFLX). HDDVD and BD was still
in the format war. I did not think NFLX would do so well in the near term. I
did not like the DVD mailing service so much because I feel entertainment
is usually impulsive and therefore should be catered accordingly. High
quality/rich content video streaming seemed and still seems to expensive for
the masses.
Then around the same time, I came across RedBox in a local McDonald's. One
dollar a day and local community presence, that's what I looked for for
meeting poor men's movie entertainment needs. I loved it and used the vendor
machine a lot for a while.
However, I had neither the mood nor the capital to invest at that time...
Lessons I learned from the experience: love life, love yourself; there is
always opportunity around the corner, don't stop looking simply.
The recent bankruptcy cases in the sector sent NFLX and CSTR soaring.
I will wait for CSTR to pull back to around $30-35 to get in. |
