US Airways Group Inc. (LCC) swung to a third-quarter profit as a key revenue
metric bounced back, lifting the top line.
Shares were up 4.3% at $10.52 in recent premarket trading as earnings beat
analysts' estimates. The stock has more than doubled this year.
The airline, which operates a mostly domestic network, has benefited along
with peers from a recovery in travel demand this year. While fares have
approved notably from last year's fire-sale levels, industry watchers'
concern has shifted to rising fuel prices and carriers' temptation to
increase capacity.
US Airways posted earnings of $240 million, or $1.22 a share, compared with
a year-earlier loss of $80 million, or 60 cents a share. Revenue jumped 17%
to $3.18 billion.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters most recently forecast earnings of $1.17
on $3.18 billion in revenue.
Companywide, passenger revenue per available seat mile, a key performance
gauge for airlines, rose 14% following last year's 15% drop amid the
downturn. Average fuel costs jumped 15%.
Traffic rose 2.3% as capacity rose edged up 1.6%. Load factor, the
percentage of available seats filled, increased to 83.1% from 82.6%. | f**********g
