Toronto-based Avalon Rare Metals is currently developing a number of rare
metals projects in Canada. Its flagship project, the 100%-owned Thor Lake
project in Canada's Northwest Territories hosts the Nechalacho deposit,
which is the second-largest rare earth element deposit in the world by
reported total rare earth elements, and the third largest niobium deposit.
Besides being large the deposit is also high grade with an exceptionally
high enrichment of valuable heavy rare earth elements (more than 20% in the
Basal Zone) which should generate high operating margins. The project is
located 100km south west of Yellowknife; access is currently by air but
there will be summer access by barge across the Great Slave Lake to a
railhead and ice road access in winter.
