EARNINGS PREVIEW:US Transport 1Q Results Seen Up Despite Headwinds
3 days 12 hours 32 minutes ago - DJNF
By John Kell
OF DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
TAKING THE PULSE: The U.S. transportation sector is broadly expected to
report stronger results in the first quarter, building on a sharp jump in
volumes last year when the industry began to see a turnaround. U.S. carloads
rose 5.1% in the first quarter, according to the Association of American
Railroads.
Jefferies & Co. last week said pricing and volumes have continued to trend
favorably as the quarter progressed, although it also saw headwinds from
weather and fuel, which the investment firm said will likely weigh on
incremental margins.
YRC Worldwide Inc. (YRCW) - reporting date to be announced
Wall Street Expectations: Analysts expect YRC to post a loss of $1.51 a
share on revenue of $1.07 billion. The company a year earlier reported a
loss of $8.25 a share on revenue of $1.06 billion. The per-share figures
reflect the company's 1-for-25 reverse stock split, which went into effect
in October.
Key Issues: A pair of ratings agencies made cuts to YRC's already low debt
ratings last month, after the company disclosed that a "milestone failure"
had occurred in its efforts to negotiate a critical financial restructuring
because it had missed a requirement to get certain nonbinding agreements on
terms by March 10. Interim Chief Financial Officer William Trubeck last
month said the company is optimistic YRC will avoid bankruptcy, noting
lenders have been cooperative as it works to stabilize its financial
position.
(The Thomson Reuters financial estimates and year-earlier figures may not be
comparable due to one-time items and other adjustments.)
