I believe an elevated volatility in commodities is bad for bulls. But the
uptrend of the benchmark are still intact. So without selling any long

Volatile movement is not a good sign for bulls. Many names in material/
capital good/financials/energy are sitting right at support, while the
pattern looks ugly (a series of lower high). I'd like to stay cautious. If
you wanna long, long defensive names.
TLT does not work very well recently, but the uptrend is still intact; I
will hold it until it break down.
I bot some PM today. Very quiet name at defensive sector, sitting right at
the support.

Today defensive sectors: utilities, health care, REITs, tobacco etc still
outperform the market. A big breakdown happens in QQQ, which is lead by
AAPL. But given a horizontal support 330-325 is so close, and other big
tech names like MSFT/CSCO is so oversold in short term, it is unlikely the
tech will continue to crash without any struggle.
The selloff in energy and materials seems halted. It may be a good idea to
bottom-fish some good names with a tight stop (oversold in short term +
sitting at support = good reward/risk ratio).
Given the market is still in a rotation mode, I still stay cautiously
bullish of the market. Some analysis said because so much money has been
poured into defensive sectors and bond, a deep correction is unlikely, which
I think make sense.
TLT works great today, given the dollar is down.
I got some COP today, betting on it would not make a new low.

More breakdown happens particularly in industrial and material sectors. BA
and CAT drag down the benchmark. There is no broad sector selloff,
defensive sectors still works very well. Bond rallies two days in a row;
TLT breakout the consolidation range. This might be a warning sign for
bulls.
I think the current strategy is still buying the defensive names with good
TA setting (with a tight stop), and adding bond if there is a pullback.

The selloff expands to health care and retail, which holds well in the
previous selloff. But utilities still worked well. I think for retail,
there would be a much larger correction, and for health care, given its
defensiveness and high dividend, this may be a chance to have some position
(wait for a few days). My ILMN was shaken out for a loss. Damn.
The whole industrials and materials sectors look bearish. I would stay away
from them for now.
Energy holds up well today, maybe because oil rallied more than one percent.
I don't think it would reverse here. Many names in explorations/integrated
hits the previous resistance (horizontal or trend line). There might be
another round of sell off to test the new low. I sold COP today to take
some profit. Pipleline looks better but there is no good entry for me.
One insurance sector looks not bad to me. I picked some ALL at the close,
betting that it would not close a new low and expecting a bounce after
filling the gap.

Today is a broad sector selloff I was expecting. This might be the
beginning of something big. A lot of breakdown in many sectors. No good
entries so far.
My strategy is still staying with the defensive names (utilities/tobacco/

Cut LINTA and JNPR when breakdown, both taking a small loss.
Damn, cut a lot of positions in these two days.
Energy shows strength. To be honest, I'd like to short XLB or XLE here (
taking advantage of the strength) to bet a breakdown. The con is that they
are still well above MA200. I am afraid of being trapped by bulls.
If there is some rebound, financials may offer a nice short setting. I am
waiting for an entry.
As I mentioned in Friday's note, pipeline works great recently. A massive
breakout for EP. Some names in this sector already have a deep pullback,
while paying a very fat dividend. You may take a look at them for a
defensive play. Energy as a whole is not too bad, to my surprise.
I have put pharm/biotech to my stay-away list, but some consumer sectors
like restaurants (MCD/YUM/DRI) still look great. There might be some
opportunities there.

Obviously in recent two days, cyclicals are back and non-cyclical goes into
a correction, after leading the market for two months. This might be a good
news for bulls. Actually energy shows some strength in this week, but I am
a little too bearish-biased on energy and materials. Without positions in
energy and materials in this week, it is very difficult the beat the market.
Technically, XLE got stuck between MA30/MA50, we probably need a breakout
of one side to confirm the trend.
ES recover from a sharp drop at last night, rallied for a whole day but
failed to regain the 1320, which have been tested twice and both are failed.
From hourly chart, ES is still in a downtrend. Even more bearish is that
ES could not reach the top of this downside channel.
I am a little lost here. I don't like chasing high, so I still stay away
from energy/materials. But watch closely, and don't get too bearish here.

Today's market is weird. While benchmark rallied 0.5%, people are rushing
into the Treasury. TLT is up 0.8% so far. The explanation might be that
because of weak economic data, another round of QE is coming?
The same as yesterday, cyclical stocks are leading the market, while
defensive ones (healthcare/utilities) continue to lag. Some big pharm
stocks like MRK and ABT suffer relatively big loss. But consumer non-
cyclical stocks (food/personal goods/tobacco) start to pick up. Energy and
materials are relatively quiet today after yesterday's big up. The biggest
winner in the last 6 months, industrical, is still moderate.
Given the market movement, I become a little bullish here, but I still wanna
stay away from materials and energy, which is too risky for me right now.
There are three sectors I particularly like at this moment:
1. Drug store: dodged this round of selloff, a breakout to the upside is
very likely.
2. Health care provider: strong uptrend and a moderate pullback. good
entry for swing.
3. MLPs (Master Limited Partnerhips): long term trend is very strong,
while recently suffer a selloff. I read some articles of MLPs. I think the
long term prospective is still good. Putting some MLPs into your portfolio
is a very good defensive way to stay in the energy game.
My pick for these three sectors are CVS/WCG/KMP

Without any good news, the market is lifted by weak dollar. But while US$
makes a new low, it cannot even push the market to a new high. And the bond
perform relatively well, pushing higher into the close. Moreover, a
declining dollar does not necessarily push the equity higher, which has
happened a lot in history (e.g. correction in last May to Aug, or recently
tsunami- Kadafi correction).
Technically, ES hit the ceiling of the downside channel. My prediction is
that we may see a selloff, particularly in energy and materials, early next
week.

Sorry I did not have time to update yesterday. Yesterday I added long in
BCR and shorts in OMC. Both looks fine today.
Today so far it looks the money has rotated back to non-cyclicals. Bond
rallied 1% again. Selloff is on offensive ones, industrials/financials/
materials. Energy is still relatively strong.
The benchmark may form a reverse H&S and then breakout, or retest the
previous low between 1300-1310. If you did not short yesterday, it might be
too late to short right now. We may need some confirmations here. My strategy is still long bonds and long
non-
cyclicals.

Today is a small capitulation day. Declining/advancing volume tops 20, the
first time since last August.
A broad sector selloff hurt almost every sectors. It is particularly bad in
offensive ones
(industrial/financial/materials/energy/technology).
As I mentioned on Friday's note, the appreciation of equity could not keep
the pace of depreciation of US$,
which is usually a warning sign and may lead to some selloff. Today US$ is
not particularly strong, otherwise,
may leading to even more severe selloff.
Bond shows strength from the open to close. 10-yr Treasury yield dip below
3.0% the first time since last
December. My prediction here is bond may take a break for a few days,
because such a length rally in bond is
relatively rare, but the overall trend may not change. 30-yr bond yield may
dip below 4.0% soon.
ES almost wipe out all the gains we had in the last two weeks, but still not
able to test the previous low (1300 -
1305).It is interesting that though VIX rallied over 18, it is still well
below the VIX level when ES reach this level
on May 23. From the SPX hourly chart, 1310-1315 is the bottom here, but
actually ES tested 1302 on May 24
and hold, so 1300-1305 may be the key levels to watch here.
In last week, I managed not to chase energy and materials, now it looks my
patience has been paid off. I cut
YUM today (ugly chart) while hold all other non-cyclical longs (tobacco/
health care provider/medical
device/utilities/food products). Of course, if the market enter a deep
correction, there is no safe haven no
matter which sector do you stay, so do set a stop for your long positions.
You will be paid off by your
dicinpline.
In May, account went up a little bit more than 3%, suffered a 2.33% drawdown
though.
