Lenovo did not make a formal statement but their customer service said this
laptop was not brand new and was probably refurbished.

I just checked the condition status online and talked with the Lenovo techni
cal support with this Serial
I was assured by the technical support director that this machine is brand n
ew, and he is willing to have a conference call with you and me.
Also, he is guessing that you might have called another customer service num
ber which is not for idealpad series. Please call 1-877-453-6686 for your is
sue.
I was also informed that they are willing to guide you through the boot-up p
rocess to help ypu set up your laptop.
In addition, I am willing to send you $25 as appreciation of this matter if
you are going to keep this laptop.
